In "More gender balance in CS, lets talk about curriculum design first!" Prof. Hermans will propose a research-informed plan to change the curricula of computer science, arguing for the importance of socially aware programmes. Then diversity will follow. This topic is highly relevant for education in all programmes in our faculty.

Initiatives for more gender diversity in computer science students have been tried for decades, with very limited success, in contrast to other studies even in the natural sciences. Maybe it is now time to stop programmes aimed at more female students and faculty until we understand what makes them reluctant to study computers science. Computer science, as it has come to be socially constructed, focuses on a mathematical and engineering culture, in which social aspects of computing are continuously sidelined, while it are precisely these issues which attract women, and other minorities such as students from low-income families. This talk proposes a research-informed plan to change curricula of computer science first, before spending more time and effort to attract more women. Of course, broader computer science programs are important for many different reasons than just for diversity, in a time when the field is influencing the world at large so strongly, there are more than enough reasons to make our programmes more socially aware, and then diversity will follow.

Op donderdag 17 september is het tijd voor de WiNSt opening van het academisch jaar! Hiervoor zullen er vanaf 16:00 verschillende praatjes zijn, waarin onder andere wordt besproken hoe de studies ervoor staan en wie de nieuwe docenten zijn. Verder zullen ook de Teaching Awards voor zowel Wiskunde als Natuur- en Sterrenkunde worden uitgereikt!

Na afloop van de jaaropening is er een uur lang een gratis borrel in de Giga-Bite, die samenvalt met de Biermiddag. Een en al gezelligheid dus!

On Thursday september 17th the WiNSt opening of the academic year will take place! From 16:00 onwards different talks will be held, specifically about the studies of Mathematics and Physics and new teachers. Furthermore, the Teaching Awards will be presented!

After the opening in HG00.307, you are more than welcome to join the Biermiddag in the Giga-Bite, where drinks will be free the first hour after the opening!

De dagen worden steeds natter en kouder, en wat kun je dan beter doen dan gezellig met elkaar spelletjes spelen! Op 22 september heeft de Akcie een spelletjesmiddag georganiseerd! Hier zullen in de Zuidkantine allerlei spellen klaar staan om gespeeld te worden, zoals een vurig potje Carcassonne, een lowkey kaartspelletje of een heus Mario Kart toernooi! Verder kun je Lijcie bestellen voor de nodige brandstof en zal de Akcie wat fris en snacks verzorgen. Je hoeft je niet aan te melden, dus kom vooral even langs als je niks te doen hebt! Tot dan!

Dear Marieërs,

The days get colder and darker, and what better to do than play some games with friends! On the 22nd of September the Akcie has organised a gamenight! There will be multiple games available to be played in the South Canteen, like a frustrating game of Carcassonne, a lowkey card game or a Mario Kart tournament! The Lijcie will be available for fuel in the form of fries, and the Akcie will bring some snacks and soft drinks. There is no sign up list, so come by if you have some free time!
