Beste masterstudenten,

Het nieuwe collegejaar gaat bijna van start! Om jullie te helpen bij het wennen en elkaar wat beter te leren kennen, organiseert de mastercommissie een gratis¹ borrel voor jullie! Noteer 7 september in jullie agenda's en dan zien we jullie in de Zuidkantine (HG05.?). De borrel begint om 17:30 en het avondeten (menu op https://www.lijcie.nl) kan tot 18:00 worden besteld.

Voor degenen onder jullie die de mastercommissie nog niet kennen: wij zijn een kleine commissie bestaande uit masterstudenten van de natuurkundestudentenvereniging Marie Curie. We organiseren activiteiten voor masterstudenten, zoals borrels, pubquizzen, potlucks en bowlen.

Dear master students,

The new year is almost starting! To help you with settling in and getting to know each other a bit better, the master committee will organize a free¹ borrel² for you! Mark September 7th down in your agendas and we'll see you in the South Canteen (HG05.?). It starts at 17:30 and dinner (menu on https://www.lijcie.nl) can be ordered until 18:00.

For those of you who don't know the master committee yet: we are a small committee consisting of master students from the physics study association Marie Curie. We organize activities for master students such as drinks, pubquizzes, potlucks and bowling.

Het is bijna zover, tijd voor de langverwachte enige echte geweldige introshirtborrel van de Boson!🤩 Dit is hét moment om erachter te komen of opnieuw te beleven hoe gezellig Marie is en de Zuidkantine te zien🕺 En wat super vet leuk is, is dat alle jaarlagen met hun eigen introshirtjes👚 er zijn, zodat je iedereen kunt leren kennen! Ook zal er natuurlijk weer een leuk spelletje te spelen zijn, met als beloning misschien wel een gratis drankje👀 De enige benodigdheden zijn je introshirt en een goede bui :) Tot in Zuid!!!

Its almost time, time for the long-awaited, one and only, amazing intro shirt party at the Boson!🤩 This is the perfect moment to find out or relive how fun Marie is and to see the South canteen🕺 And whats super cool is that all year groups will be there with their own intro shirts👚 , so you can get to know everyone! Of course, there will also be a fun game to play again, with perhaps a free drink as a reward👀 The only things you need are your intro shirt and a good mood :) See you in Zuid!!!

Lieve eerstejaars en Marieërs uit een ander tijdperk,

Volgende week zal de Boson haar welbekende Introshirtborrel geven, waar we nu al zin in hebben! Helaas houdt dat feestje al om 21:00 op De Particie heeft de ideale oplossing: om 21:30 kunnen jullie namelijk direct door waggelen, rollen of slenteren naar café Fuik, waar 40 gratis bier staat te wachten. Daarnaast zal er korting zijn op onder andere de radjes🎡

Als jij nog één van die zwoele intronachten van twee weken terug (of van uit een ver, ver verleden) wil herbeleven, moet je hier bij zijn.

Dear first-years and Marieërs from another era.

Next week, Boson is hosting its famous Introshirt-borrel, were already looking forward to it! Unfortunately, that party wraps up at 21:00, but the Particie has the perfect solution: at 21:30, you can waddle, roll, or stroll straight over to Café Fuik, where 40 free beers await. Plus, there will be discounts on 'radjes' 🎡

If you want to relive one of those sultry intro nights from two weeks ago (or from the distant, distant past), you simply have to be there.

The Particie

In "More gender balance in CS, lets talk about curriculum design first!" Prof. Hermans will propose a research-informed plan to change the curricula of computer science, arguing for the importance of socially aware programmes. Then diversity will follow. This topic is highly relevant for education in all programmes in our faculty.

Initiatives for more gender diversity in computer science students have been tried for decades, with very limited success, in contrast to other studies even in the natural sciences. Maybe it is now time to stop programmes aimed at more female students and faculty until we understand what makes them reluctant to study computers science. Computer science, as it has come to be socially constructed, focuses on a mathematical and engineering culture, in which social aspects of computing are continuously sidelined, while it are precisely these issues which attract women, and other minorities such as students from low-income families. This talk proposes a research-informed plan to change curricula of computer science first, before spending more time and effort to attract more women. Of course, broader computer science programs are important for many different reasons than just for diversity, in a time when the field is influencing the world at large so strongly, there are more than enough reasons to make our programmes more socially aware, and then diversity will follow.
