Today started quietly. We were expected to gather at 09.50 in front of our house in Manchester. Of course, this was an easy task, taking into account an uncertainty margin of a few minutes.

From here the journey was set towards our last institute visit, The University of Sheffield, in Sheffield. Here, the plan was to visit the physics department that focuses on applied particle physics.

The journey commenced with a short bus trip to the station. On arrival, we had to wait a bit for the train, creating the perfect conditions for locating a cup of coffee. I certainly made use of these circumstances. In the meantime, we noticed someone hurling with great speed towards a soon-departing train. We excitingly watched this person sprinting down the stairs, but alas, a wasted effort, for the doors had closed right in front of him. You could see the disappointment.

After this spectacle, the train set off to Sheffield, a journey of about an hour. At about 11.45 we arrived at Sheffield Station, where we had slightly over an hour and a half of free time. We all decided to go to a large Sainsbury's to get some lunch, and then have a seat in a nearby park.

At 13.30 it was time to gather in front of the university building. Here, William did a small introduction about the institute. Once inside, we got an overview of all the research done there and some applications of cosmic rays, like moisture detection in farmland and muon tomography. We also received a tour of a shed with a water tank detector and a millikelvin cooling system for dark matter detection.

After a slight delay, at approximately 18.45, we got on a quite busy train torwards Manchester. At Manchester Oxford Station, we got off and a group of people (including myself) had the idea to eat in a pub a final time. After a first attempt at a BrewDog pub, which was sadly full, we went to a nearby Whetherspoons, which luckily wasn't full. Here we ended the day with a fine (and relatively cheap) meal and some drinks.

Vandaag begon rustig. Om 09.50 werd van ons verwacht dat we zouden verzamelen voor in de hal bij ons huisje in Manchester. Dit is vanzelfsprekend gelukt met een onzekerheid van een aantal minuten.

Vanaf hier vertrok de reis richting het laatste instituut, de universiteit van Sheffield, in Sheffield. Hier stond op de planning een bezoek aan de natuurkunde afdeling die gefocust is op toegepaste deeltjesfysica.

De reis begon met een kort ritje in de bus richting het station. Eenmaal hier moesten we even wachten op de trein, wat de perfecte omstandigheden creëerde voor het halen van een bakje koffie. Hier heb ik dan ook gebruik van gemaakt. In de tussentijd zagen we iemand met enorme haast op een trein afhollen die op het punt stond om te vertrekken. We keken vol spanning toe hoe deze persoon met een sprintje de trap afkwam. Helaas was de moeite tevergeefs, want de deur ging net voor zijn neus dicht. Je kon de teleurstelling zien.

Na dit spektakel begon de treinreis richting Sheffield, een rit van ongeveer een uur. Rond 11.45 arriveerden we bij Sheffield Station, waar we iets meer dan anderhalf uur vrije tijd hadden. We besloten om met z'n allen naar een grote Sainsbury's te gaan om lunch in te slaan, wat we daarna in een nabijgelegen parkje opgegeten hebben.

Om 13.30 was het tijd om te verzamelen voor het gebouw van de universiteit. Hier deed William zijn praatje over het instituut. Eenmaal binnen kregen we een overzicht van al het onderzoek en wat toepassingen van cosmic rays, zoals waterdetectie in landbouwgrond en muon tomografie. Verder kregen we nog een rondleiding van een schuurtje met een watertank detector en een millikelvin koelsysteem voor het detecteren van donkere materie.

Na een beetje uitloop zaten we rond 18.30 in een heel volle trein richting Manchester. We stapten uit bij Manchester Oxford Station en een aantal mensen (inclusief mijzelf) had het plan om voor de laatste keer in een pub wat te eten. Na eerst een BrewDog pub geprobeerd te hebben, die helaas vol zat, zijn we doorgelopen naar de dichtstbijzijnde Wetherspoons, die gelukkig niet vol zat. Hier sloten we de dag af met een prima (maar vooral relatief goedkope) maaltijd en wat drankjes.
